Volleyball Performance Training (Summer Program)

The Challenge:

The world of sports and sport performance training has evolved significantly. It is now substantially more demanding then it ever was ten or twenty years ago. Athletes are playing/training more, doing harder skills, at higher repetitions, for longer hours, at younger ages, with the end result being exponentially more force being placed on their bodies. Although these advances are important for pushing the frontier of athletic development and performance, a vast majority of these athletes are very young kids or adolescents who are far from being fully matured, and who simply do not possess the structural tolerance and strength to handle the persistent forces of sometimes multiple sports, but worse, repetitive, single sport training. Likewise, with adult populations participating in gruelling “weekend” sports or vigorous recreational activities after spending 40+ hours sitting at a desk. Regardless of the circumstances, adequate physical preparation is paramount, with motor control, structural tolerance, and strength residing at the top of the physical preparation priority list (or base layers [foundational building blocks] of the performance hierarchy), alongside technical development, mobility, and stability.

The main reason strength, technical proficiency, and motor control development are so crucial is because these qualities allow an athlete to produce, transfer, and absorb force more efficiently and effectively. Being able to handle high amounts of force and move easily into (and out of) particular positions and shapes is how elite athletes can perform incredible skills and optimize their safety, joint health, and injury risk over multiple years. Just think about how and why injuries (either acute or chronic/overuse) occur - the forces imposed on the body by the environment (external forces) are greater than the body’s ability to withstand/overcome those forces (ie. not enough internal force generating capacity).

By participating in a carefully designed physical preparation program (designed and monitored by a qualified movement professional), we can systematically teach the body to handle more force, prepare tissues for loading within a broad range of skills as well as sport-specific ones, and encourage proper movement mechanics as a method of injury prevention.

The Solution:

My Volleyball Performance Training Summer Program is dedicated to enhancing volleyball athletes’ movement competencies, mobility, strength, and power capabilities through a carefully planned and periodized combination of 1) large group Outdoor Speed and Power Training sessions 2) gym-based Semi-private (2-3 participants) Personal Training sessions to work on specific strength and mobility deficits and 3) a comprehensive and complimentary Online Training Program with video demonstrations and additional member only instructional content. Specifically designed for volleyball players (with age-appropriate training programs and options), the coach-led sessions and online program content will introduce the most recent advances in movement, strength, and performance training science and practice in order to help young, aspiring athletes build the fundamental movement foundation required for subsequent participation in competitive/high level volleyball.

Scott Lahey (see full bio here).

As a Kinesiologist, Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (NSCA), Functional Range Conditioning Mobility Specialist (FRS), and former FIVB pro beach volleyball player I am uniquely qualified, but more importantly, highly motivated to deliver this comprehensive Youth Sport Performance Training Program during this challenging and frustrating time. With nearly two decades of experience working with athletes of all ages and in multiple sports, I’ve seen novice athletes transform into University, Olympic, and Professional-level competitors (myself included), and, unfortunately, seen others be sidelined by easily avoidable, persistent injuries, due to insufficient or inappropriate training methods. Learning from my own mistakes, and the mistakes made by those who remain ignorant of the latest science and practice of strength/performance training, I have made it my mission to work with developing athletes, sport coaches, and teams/organizations to help deliver Performance Training and Physical Preparation solutions that work.

Program Objectives:

  • Provide an opportunity for volleyball players to keep exploring movement during the coronavirus pandemic and to take advantage of this extended “off-season.”

  • Teach proper movement mechanics as a method of injury prevention, and help build the musculoskeletal system's resilience.

  • Remove movement restrictions and improve joint function and the quality and efficiency of movement.

  • Systematically prepare the body to handle more force (ie. get progressively stronger).

  • Learn how to tap into larger motor units typically associated with fast-twitch type II fibres, and increase explosive strength (ie. increase vertical jump, running velocity etc.).

  • Improve stability, control, and structural balance in the body.

  • Keep athletes accountable for their physical preparation and recovery practices and increase compliance.

Program Overview:

  • 8-week Volleyball Performance Training Program consisting of the following (with multiple training options/times/features/levels of commitment):

    • Outdoor Speed and Power Sessions (1 per week) @ CBVA (Calgary Beach Volleyball Association at Valleyview Park).

    • Gym-based Semi-Private (2-3 participants) Personal Training Sessions (1 per week) @ Playfit Health and Performance’s SE facility (McKenzie Towne) or alternative location based on participant request (or virtual via Zoom Meetings). These sessions will allow us to prioritize each individual’s movement/performance deficits, imbalances, and specific training needs.

    • A comprehensive Online Training Program to compliment the other sessions during the week and support athlete development and training compliance during periods of travel or missed training sessions.

    • Access to member-only pre-recorded instructional videos and bonus content.

Program Schedule:
